Shih Tzu Grooming in Lincoln

Shih Tzus have a genuine double-length coat that grows continuously, plus a flat face that needs particular care. They are a breed where regular professional grooming is not optional.

A coat that never stops growing

A Shih Tzu's coat behaves more like human hair than a typical dog coat. It grows continuously rather than reaching a set length and shedding, which means without regular cutting it simply keeps going.

It is also a true double coat, with a soft undercoat beneath the long outer hair. That undercoat is where matting begins — tight to the skin, out of sight, and often well established before anything looks wrong on the surface.

The face needs its own attention

Shih Tzus have prominent eyes and a short muzzle, and hair growing towards the eye causes real irritation. Every groom includes a face trim to keep hair out of the eyes and the muzzle clean and comfortable.

Tear staining is common and largely down to moisture sitting in the fur below the eye. Keeping that area short and clean is the practical fix. Facial folds also need drying properly after a bath, or they stay damp and become sore.

How often should a Shih Tzu be groomed?

Every four to six weeks in a short puppy cut, or every six to eight in a longer style with daily brushing at home. Full show length is a daily commitment and not realistic for most family dogs.

Most Lincoln owners settle on a puppy cut every six weeks, which keeps them comfortable, keeps the face clear and takes the pressure off home brushing.

What we do for Shih Tzus

Full Shih Tzu groom

Bath, blow-dry, full comb-through, clip, face and eye trim, nails, ears and hygiene tidy.

Puppy cut

An even short length all over. The most practical style for a family Shih Tzu and easiest to maintain.

Face and feet tidy

A quick option between full grooms, keeping the eyes clear and the paws neat.

De-matting

Common in this breed and assessed honestly. A short clip is often kinder than working through a felted undercoat.

Shih Tzu grooming questions

A full Shih Tzu groom starts at £52. On VIP Membership, a six-weekly Shih Tzu is £39 a month, or £29 a month at eight-weekly, including the seasonal spa treatment, free walk-in nail clips and shop discount.
An even, short length across the whole body with a rounded face. Despite the name it has nothing to do with age — it is simply the most practical everyday style for the breed, and the one most Shih Tzu owners choose.
Keep the hair below the eyes trimmed short and wipe the area daily with plain water or a product made for the purpose, drying afterwards. Staining is caused by moisture sitting in the fur, so the answer is keeping it short and dry rather than anything applied to it. If the eye itself looks sore or is running more than usual, see your vet.
Yes, and the interval should not change. Their coat grows continuously regardless of season, and a longer winter coat mats faster because it is wet more often. If anything, wet Lincolnshire winters make regular grooming more important, not less.
