Puppy Grooming in Lincoln
Your puppy's first few visits to a salon shape how they feel about grooming for the rest of their life. We take that seriously, and we take it slowly.
When should a puppy have their first groom?
From around 16 weeks, and about two weeks after their second vaccination. Earlier than that they are not protected; much later than that and you have missed the window when they accept new experiences most readily.
The single most common mistake we see is waiting until the coat needs cutting. By then the puppy is six or eight months old, the coat is already matting, and their first ever experience of a salon is a long, uncomfortable session. That dog will remember it.
Bring them before they need it. The first appointment is not really about the haircut.
What a first groom actually involves
Short, gentle and deliberately undemanding. We handle their paws, ears and face. We introduce the sound of clippers without necessarily using them. A bath and a light dry, so they learn what the dryer sounds like. A light tidy around the eyes and feet if they are coping well.
If your puppy has had enough after twenty minutes, we stop. Finishing on a good note matters far more than finishing the haircut, and there is always next time.
We groom one dog at a time, which for a puppy means no waiting around, no queue of other dogs, and one person's full attention from start to finish.
What you can do at home
Handle their paws every day. Hold each foot, spread the toes, touch the nails. Ten seconds is enough. Do the same with ears and around the muzzle.
Get them used to a brush and comb before there is anything to brush out. Two minutes, then a treat, while they are calm rather than mid-zoomies.
Run a hairdryer on a cool setting in the same room, not pointed at them, so the noise becomes background rather than an event.
Puppies who have had this done at home are transformed in the salon, and it takes five minutes a day.
The coat change is coming
Between roughly eight and fourteen months, most coated breeds swap their soft puppy coat for a denser adult one. For a few months both grow through each other and the dog mats faster than at any other time in their life.
This catches out almost every first-time owner of a Cockapoo, Cavapoo, Labradoodle or Shih Tzu. It is not something you have done wrong. It passes, but getting through it usually means grooming more often for a while and sometimes accepting a shorter cut than you had in mind.
