Why Cockapoos need grooming more than most

A Cockapoo's coat doesn't shed the way a Cocker Spaniel's does. Instead of dropping out, loose hair stays trapped in the curl. Left alone, that trapped hair twists around the growing coat and becomes matting — usually starting behind the ears, in the armpits, around the collar and between the back legs.

The frustrating part is that it happens underneath. The coat can look perfectly fluffy on top while the layer against the skin is already felted. Most owners who arrive with a badly matted Cockapoo brushed regularly — they just brushed the top and never got a comb down to the skin.

Cockapoo coats also vary enormously depending on which side of the cross they take after. A fleece coat, a wool coat and a straighter hair coat all behave differently and need different handling. We work out which yours has on the first visit.

How often should a Cockapoo be groomed?

Every six to eight weeks is the honest answer for most Cockapoos, with a proper comb-through at home two or three times a week between visits. Wool-coated dogs often need every four to six.

Stretching to twelve weeks is possible with a shorter clip and diligent brushing, but it isn't what most owners manage in practice. If you're going longer than eight weeks, ask us for a shorter style rather than a longer gap.

Puppies should come in from around 16 weeks — before the adult coat arrives — purely to get used to the process. That first visit shapes how they feel about grooming for the rest of their life.

The coat change nobody warns you about

Somewhere between eight and fourteen months, a Cockapoo's soft puppy coat is pushed out by the denser adult coat. For a few months the two grow through each other, and the dog mats faster than at any other point in their life.

If your Cockapoo has suddenly become impossible to brush and they're under about eighteen months old, this is why. It passes. Getting through it usually means grooming more often for a while, and sometimes accepting a shorter cut than you'd like.
